EMMA-JEAN THACKRAY SPECTRE

Emma-Jean Thackray's extremely accomplished 'Say Something' caught our attention back in April. 'Spectre' is the equally impressive second single from the composer and multi-instrumentalist's forthcoming debut LP Yellow. Fittingly accompanied by a live video at The Church Studios in Crouch End (home of esteemed producer Paul Epworth and where much of Adele's early tunes were recorded) there's something equally dramatic and seminal about 'Spectre'. Exercising an incredible understanding of tension and release, the layered piece builds from a brassy bass line that keeps the jazzier elements in check. Using ghostly imagery to tackle her personal struggles with depression, Thackray explains: “Mental illness can devour a person from the inside, feeding on their joy, their passions, even their memories, and leave them to haunt the house like a ghost of their former selves. ‘Spectre' is a means of catharsis.” Yellow will arrive on the 2nd of July via Thackray's own Movement label. -Holly Mullineaux
